"As American as apple pie." Is apple pie truly American? How did this tasty dessert originate?

Pie and the atom have both changed over the course of history. Read this brief article (http://content.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1862315,00.html) on the history of pie and leave a comment about the thing you found most interesting in pie history.

This online WebQuest will lead you to multiple websites from which you can gather information to answer the questions that follow each link about the history of the atom. Further directions are on the website. Write the questions and all responses in your lab journal using complete sentences. Title this "Atomic Odyssey". It is due Friday, April 10.

  1. In the article Pie I found that there were lots interesting things about the history of a pie. One being that historians have traces the pie back to the Greeks and the Romans would have meat pies. Which was pretty weird since our pies today are mostly sweet. In medieval England they also did this with pies but they called them "pyes" which sounds pretty much the same but here the people stuffed the pie with beef, lamb, wild duck, magpie pigeon. That was pretty interesting the people back then would eat pie with a bird in it. With this these pies were still desert meals. That really interested me since the pie has meat isn't that a main course meal? Very weird but interesting.

  2. After reading the passage about pies, the most interesting thing I learned was that the classic American apple pie, isn't actually American. The recipe was originally brought from Europe and pies originally were stuffed with meat. The sweeter pies were a more recent recipe. I also thought the fact that they still considered the pies to be a dessert was interesting.

  3. In the pie article, I would it very interesting that historians were able to trace back the routes of pie to the ancient Greeks and Romans. It's interesting how pies have changed drastically in their contents (instead of apples or pumpkin in the pie, there was usually meat put into pies). Strangely enough, the meat pies were still considered dessert. It proved to be a very interesting article.

  4. I found it cool that the ancient Greeks and Romans made pies, and that in Medieval Europe, pies were stuffed with heavily seasoned meat of all varieties. The thing that interested me the most was that pilgrims used pies as a way to keep food (the filling) from spoiling.

  5. The most interesting thing i learned via the article was the pies were originally savory. The Greeks are believed to have invented the pastry dish, and after that Rome adopted it and stuffed it with seafood. In medieval England the pies contained meats and were called pyes. It wasn't until the pilgrims that the pies were filled with dried fruit, cinnamon, and nutmeg.

  6. In the pie article, I found the origins of pie to be most interesting. Pie actually originated from Ancient Rome and Greece which I found not only interesting but, surprising as well. Pie came to America from Europe which is not what I originally thought.

  7. What I found most interesting about the article is that when pie was first invented it was not sweet, instead it had all sorts of meat in it like lamb. I never thought that meat could be in a pie.

  8. I found the article about pie very interesting. Mainly because I thought that pies originated in America. Then to read that they weren't filled with the things we use today was weird. I also found it interesting that they used such a variety of spices. I also found it very interesting that the colonists used the pie crusts as a way to preserve the meats inside. I also found it fascinating how the British spelled pie "pyes".

  9. One fact I found interesting in this article was that the original pie recipe came from England. Also since then the recipe has changed and different ingredients were used.

  10. I found it interesting that pie was found in midevil times and was filled with meats and that our pie today is just a new kind of pie compared to the pie from midevil times. It was weird to know that they filled pie with meat but it was still cool to find out.

I found the article to be very interesting. One thing that I found interesting was that pies didn't originate from America and scientists were able to trace pies all the way back to Ancient Greece and Rome. Also I thought that pies filled with meat was strange but interesting.

  13. One thing I found interesting was that pies were at first called pyes and they were from England. Also they were filled with meat kinda like a sheperds pie.

  14. The thing about pies that I found most interesting was that pies didn't start out as desserts or sweets but as were more of a main dish with meat, seafood, and spices on them.

  15. I Think that it is really interesting that at first people didn't put things like apples, pumpkins, or pecans in their pies. The first pies were stuffed with meat, dried fruit, cinnamon, pepper and nutmeg.
